Shelby County woman sweeping, injured by alleged drunk driver

by | Apr 25, 2014 | Car Accidents

Taking pride in your community is one of the signs that you care about where you live. One of the ways to show your pride is to help keep the area clean. For one Shelby County woman, sweeping her sidewalk ended with a tragic accident.

The accident occurred on Easter Sunday next to the St. James Catholic Church. A woman who is a neighbor near the church was cleaning her side yard when an alleged drunk driver crashed into her. The pickup truck the driver was operating went over the curb. The truck’s left front wheel was lost in the accident, but that didn’t stop the driver from fleeing. A rut in the asphalt remained after the man smashed into the woman and then kept on driving.

While the woman was struck, she did have a chance to move slightly to avoid being run over. Her eyes were open, and she was breathing after the pedestrian versus car accident. The woman’s husband says she had tests done the following day and is expected to be okay.

Despite fleeing the scene, the alleged drunk driver couldn’t flee the law. Neighbors chased the man down. Police say he blew a .189 on a blood alcohol breath test. He was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. Additionally, he was charged with being a convicted sex offender without carrying proper identification. His bond was set at $15,000.

The woman who was injured likely faces a host of medical bills stemming from this drunk driving car accident. She also has to deal with the aftermath of her injuries. Anyone who has been involved in a similar accident might have the right to seek compensation for those injuries, including compensation for medical bills.
