Table games dealers at Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica County are scheduled to vote Jan. 9 on whether to be represented by the United Auto Workers union.

The UAW has been working for the past year to organize the workers at the casino in the gaming district near Memphis at Robinsonville, Mississippi.

Union officials could not be reached for comment.

A National Labor Relations Board filing says all full-time, part-time and dual-rate table games dealers employed Nov. 29 at the casino will be eligible to vote.

A spokesman for casino owner MGM Resorts Mississippi Inc. said about 300 workers are eligible to vote.

The owner isn't stating a position on the election.

"The petition was filed, we stipulated to the election, now we await the results of the vote," said MGM Resorts' Gordon Absher.

About 400 workers at Gold Strike already are represented by unions UNITE HERE, the Teamsters and the International Union of Operating Engineers, Absher said.

He wasn't sure which employee groups in Tunica were unionized but said contracts at other properties cover such employees as food service workers and housekeeping.

The Detroit union currently represents casino employees in Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio and Rhode Island.

Gold Strike, a 1,258-room hotel and casino, opened in 1994.

Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts International owns 15 casinos in the United States including the Robinsonville site and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

In the quarter ended Sept. 30, MGM reported profits of $66.4 million on revenue of $2.2 billion.

The company plans to put most of the casinos into a real estate investment trust to help cut $12.9 billion in long-term debt and boost stock value.
