RAPID CITY, S.D. -

We depend on the regional carriers in KOTA Territory, but a shortage of pilots means fewer flights.

Regional airlines in the US are affected by a pilot shortage.

"They're really having trouble keeping and maintaining their pilot supply," said Patrick Dame, Rapid City Regional Airport.

Active pilot and blogger Robert Smith says regional jets now account for nearly half of domestic departures. As a result, pilots aren't using regional carriers as a stepping stone to the next job; they're making it a career. But the problem is the pay says former regional pilot Robert Gusinsky.

"Starting pay is an average of $27,000 a year," said former pilot Robert Gusinsky, "It takes close to $200,000 now to get to the point where you can fly for a regional airline."

Following a crash in 2009, pilots are now required to have 1,500 hours of flight time before getting their pilot license.

"For the vast majority of pilots, the training requirements have gone up significantly and that will also serve to reduce the number of available pilots."

So what does this mean for KOTA Territory?

"There won't be as many take-offs and landings or availability to get to your hub destination," said Dame.

Many regional carriers are trying to alleviate the problem by increasing pay to $50,000, giving better benefits and improving work conditions. Dame says, "Pilots are getting together with the American Association of Airport Executives to work with congress to help them understand what we're seeing on the horizon here and to get to them act to help close the gap with the pilot shortage issue."

Right now the shortage is a regional problem, but pilots worry that if it isn't addressed soon, it may start affecting some of the larger airlines.
