(WSAU)  A Wausau gentleman's club has settled a wage-and-hour lawsuit by former dancers. Grand Daddy's will pay $100,000.

Former dancer Elizabeth Mays sued Grand Daddy's claiming she was incorrectly classified as an independent contractor when she should have been considered an employee. She also sued an adult nightclub in LaCrosse, and was joined by other dancers.

Mays will get back pay of $7,200 and will share in the total settlement amount with other dancers. Another club in Buffalo County settled a similar lawsuit for more than $200,000. More than 200 dancers were part of that case.

The Wausau Daily Herald reports that the case went to mediation last fall. The case was scheduled for trial next month. The settlement still needs to be approved by the judge overseeing the lawsuit. That's expected to happen on April 1st.

The nightclubs regularly required dancers to pay stage fees and share their tips with other club staff. The dancers argued that they're not independent contractors because the clubs have specific rules and hour requirements that would be allowed only if they were considered employees. Federal labor law has strict rules for when a worker is classified as an employee or an independent contractor.
