Mother of truck accident victim fights for stricter punishment

by | Jan 31, 2014 | Truck Accidents

When discussing or reading about certain laws, it can be easy for outsiders to see the matters as somewhat cold and impersonal. Statute “XYZ,” for example, might read like a technical manual, but when applied to real life holds the future of people’s lives and peace of mind in its hands.

A mother who lost her daughter in a Tennessee truck accident last year is putting a face and life value to a statute that she believes is insufficient. She argues that the truck driver who was speeding and failed to exercise enough caution before causing the fatal wreck deserves harsher punishment than what is coming to him.

The driver is facing criminal consequences for his actions last June that took the life of a 25-year-old woman and her 28-year-old fiance. He was to face trial today and be sentenced for his reckless driving. The most severe sentencing he could face, based on current law, is 30 days in jail and a $50 fine.

In the eyes of the mother of a victim, that sentence doesn’t match the severity of the driver’s wrongdoing and the value of the loss he caused in the truck accident. She wants more in order to live up to the memory of her daughter. She believes a society deserves stricter laws related to the negligence exhibited by the truck wreck.

Victims of reckless truck drivers or those who have lost a loved one to a tractor trailer accident in Tennessee can seek justice through a personal injury suit. A truck accident lawyer could explain how the civil route could help address the needs and wants of negligence victims.
